THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF MARBELLA – BAM
NEWSLETTER  DECEMBER 2012
The November BAM Monthly lunch was held on 29th Nov. at the Mare Nostrum Chinese restaurant. Many thanks to Violette for arranging another great event. I think we had at least 23 happy eaters!
As agreed by the BAM committee a central Marbella location will be used for our special Christmas lunch this year, to be held on Wednesday 19th December. Two likely locations, both in the old town, were proposed. The majority votes were for the French menu, at an all- inclusive price of €29 for members and €31 for non-members. The restaurant chosen is the Bistrot Casanis, located just behind and to the north of the town hall. Overleaf, is the menu and the address of the Bistrot Casanis. Please would you telephone Violette,  immediately, if you wish to attend? A deposit of €10 must be paid before a place can be confirmed. Fully paid-up BAM members may bring one guest.
With all these activities happening in the next month or so now is an idea time to renew your BAM membership 2012-13 BAM. The annual fee is €12. Please see Angret.
Reminder, until further notice the coffee morning on Wednesdays will be at the café within the Marbella Pensionista, 11 Calle de Juan Ramón Jiménez, Marbella.
19 paid-up people are going on the BAM arranged Gibraltar trip on Wednesday 12th Dec. Please note: Currently, Pick-up at La Canada is 09:45 and at La Cala it is 09:30. Remember, you need to take your passports.
At the last BAM Committee meeting the subject of charity donations was raised. Nominations for likely recipients were collected and after discussion and then a series of votes by each member of the full committee it was agree that Triple A and Aspandem
Charities would each receive a €400 cheque. These cheques are to be presented at the January and February BAM monthly lunches, so that BAM might get some publicity on each occasion.
Currently, we have no firm venues or trips for 2013. Please would you submit any ideas you have for any social events to any Committee member so that the idea can be fully considered at the next meeting in early January?
Please see, kindly loaded for us by Alex and constantly updated by Eva.

NEWSLETTER  NOVEMBER 2012
Thanks go to Violette who arranged for a representative from the Marbella Volunteers Organisation to give BAM members a talk on what free services are available to us from their Organisation at her home on Wednesday 7th Nov. Attached is a copy of the MVO ‘flyer’ etc., so all BAM members are aware of what is available in Marbella.
Members have complained about the background noise at the café Acebuche and have requested that we should find another more suitable location for our coffee morning meeting. To this end Norma arranged that we should visit the café within the Marbella Pensionista on Wednesday 7th Nov. Although most members arrived late, having attended the MVO presentation, this location proved to be a success. Some members stayed to enjoy the Menu de Dia at only €6:50.
The coffee morning on Wednesday 14th Nov will be at the café within the Marbella Pensionista. Although there is a planned general strike for that day we are advised, by the Pensionista Management, that the café will remain open for business.
We are making up BAM parties for various coach trips; I have places reserved on each:
Tour the Lakes and village of Carratraca, with lunch and wine included at the Casa Pepa – Tuesday 20th November - €28 – to date only 3 places requested.
Gibraltar trip – Wednesday 12th December - €11 – to date 16 places requested.
Before formally booking with Valarie, BAM must receive full payment for the trip.  Please contact Joan, with payment.
The November Monthly lunch will be at the Mare Nostrum Chinese restaurant. Violette has agreed that we will have a banquet similar to that previously supplied to BAM; about 10 dishes, together with coffee or a dessert for a mere €14.00 for members and €16.00 for non-members. If you wish to attend this lunch, please contact Violette, as soon as possible.
The central Marbella location for our special Christmas lunch is being considered along with
the Naranja Club. Suggestions from members would be welcomed.
Please remember that your membership fee for 2012-13 BAM year must now be paid. The annual fee is €12. A full year membership will immediately become payable for all who attend any three BAM events.
During the year Gigi celebrated her 80th birthday with a party in aid of Cancer. During the event Gigi collected €600. This cash was given to BAM. BAM immediately forwarded a BAM cheque, on behalf of the collection from Gigi, to Los Claveles. We must thank Gigi for her continued efforts in supporting help for Cancer sufferers.

NEWSLETTER       END OF OCTOBER 2012
The 25th Anniversary BAM Lunch took place on Wednesday, 24th October, at Hotel Tamisa Golf. The event for the 25 of us who attended proved to be very successful. The location and food were excellent.
We must give our sincere thanks to our life members; Norma, Mary, Jean and Angela who each gave their personal tributes to the efforts and results that have occurred during the 25 year period. See attached photos.
Violette has arranged for a representative from the Marbella Volunteers Organisation to give BAM members a talk on what free services are available to us from their Organisation. The event is to take place at Violette’s home at 11:00 on Wednesday 7th Nov. Please advise Violette, if you wish to attend.

For those members wishing to stay for lunch at the Pensionista café I believe the menu de dia is €6:50.
We are still considering making up BAM parties for various coach trips; I have 10 places reserved on each:

THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF MARBELLA –
BAM NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2012
It is with sadness that I report the death of Annabel. Her funeral, attended by BAM members, occurred last Friday. As a long-time member of BAM I am sure she will be missed by many. May I, on behalf of BAM, pass our sincere condolences to her family.
May I give our sincere thanks to Fran for organizing the July Monthly Lunch event. It was to be held on Thursday 26th July at the restaurant Los Ormillos in San Pedro. However BAM members badly let her down. Having chosen a new location the event would seem to have had all the ingredients to be a huge success. 5 days prior to the event 18 folk had booked their attendance, but by the day before the event only 5 were willing to get to the restaurant. When Joan and I had to cancel late in that day, so Joan could meet an unexpected change to her knee surgeon appointment, it was decided to cancel the BAM event. Joan sends her thanks for the beautiful plant BAM presented to her.
With this lack of interest and the summer weather it was decided by the committee not to hold a BAM lunch in August. The BAM AGM is to be held on Thursday, 27th September, followed immediately by our own BAM Monthly Lunch. Violette and Tim have kindly offered their home for the meeting. Location details will be provided later. The AGM is only for fully paid-up members. Please remember that your membership fee for next year must be paid at the meeting. The annual fee is €12. A full year membership will immediately become payable for all who attend any three BAM events.
The committee has not decided on the location or date for the 25th Anniversary Lunch. All BAM committee members resign at the AGM. New officers, President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and up to 3 other Committee Members are then chosen from the AGM attendees. Nominations for all officers must be received by the secretary, Joan, prior to the AGM. Please note that Pat, Joan and Jan do not want to be included in the BAM committee in any position, hence the positions of President, Treasurer and Secretary MUST be filled by 3 other members.Since a new BAM committee will be in place prior to the October event the Zoo trip is on hold. The current BAM Committee members are no longer investigating the possibility of other events. Any ideas? Do not forget to also join us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera) for an interesting break in the week! By request of some members an alternative quieter location is being investigated.
THE BRITISH ASSOCIATION OF MARBELLA – BAM
NEWSLETTER JULY 2012
Our excursions to the Bonsai Museum that involved 18 members and then on to for lunch at the Bodega el Duende with 29 attendees were both great successes. Several of us took photographs and Joe has again used these pictures issuing a press release on behalf of BAM. Thanks must also go to Joe for getting BAM text and BAM pictures in many publications during the month.
The July Monthly Lunch event is to be held on Thursday 26th July at the restaurant Los Ormillos in San Pedro.  The total cost of the meal is €11 (€13 for guests) which includes the tip and one drink.  Extra drinks can be ordered from the waiter and paid for separately to the waiter. Please let Fran, know whether you are to attend the lunch before Monday 22nd July. It is suggested that people wishing to travel by bus meet at the bus next to Aromata at 13.05, to take the 54 bus to San Pedro terminus, where Los Ormillos is located.   The fare is €1.16 (or €0.58 cents if you have a green sesenta y cinqo card)
The BAM AGM is to be held on Thursday, 27th September, followed immediately by our own BAM Monthly Lunch to celebrate our BAM Silver Jubilee. Violette and Tim have kindly offered their home for the meeting. Location details will be provided later. The AGM is only for members. Please remember that your membership fee for next year must be paid at the meeting. The annual fee is €12. A full year membership will immediately become payable for all who attend any three BAM events.
In October, we still intend to visit the Zoo in Fuengirola, however no fixed plans have yet been made. If you think you would like to be included please advise Joan.
The BAM Committee members are also investigating the possibility of other events. Currently, trips to Malaga and an overnight trip to Salamanca are being considered.
It is suggested, in September, since we now have more Spanish members, that we hold Spanish Conversation sessions. This would be either as part of a coffee morning or at another venue to suit those interested. If you want to be involved, please contact Joan. Any other suggestions and assistance for events would be welcomed.
Do not forget to also join us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera) for an interesting break in the week!

The news on Jean is constantly getting better. She thanked BAM for her flowers and hopes to be back with us very soon. Our thoughts remain with Annabel and we trust her condition will improve.
Do not forget to also join us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera) for an interesting break in the week! We must be doing something right since our coffee morning attendances are about twice what they were 2 months ago.

NEWSLETTER MAY 2012
The April BAM Monthly lunch was held at the Chinese restaurant, Mare Nostrum on 26th April. Unfortunately, at the last moment 6 members did not show, however the restaurant did not charge us for the reduction and the remaining 18 thoroughly enjoyed the memorable event. Joe Molitor and his partner Helga Marcelis kindly celebrated their 9 years of friendship with us at the event. They contributed a magnificent cake for desert sharing it with all members present. We all thank Joe and Helga for this generous gift. Photographs taken are shown on the next page.
The May BAM Monthly Lunch will be postponed, allowing us to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. It is to be held on Sunday 3rd June at Club Naranja, Calahonda. This is the same location BAM used for last year’s successful Christmas lunch. The ‘Royal Roast’ is a 4 course meal to include a drink and staff tip at an inclusive cost of only €15 for members and €17 for non-members. Those wishing to attend, all nationalities being warmly welcomed, should advise Pat before Wednesday 30th May; giving her €10 deposit to secure their place. If necessary, transport from Marbella to Calahonda will be organised. The theme for the event being British it would be appreciated if attendees would try to be dressed in clothing based on red, blue and white colours.
Our excursion to the Bonsai Museum and then on to for lunch at the Bodega el Duende is to take place as our June BAM Monthly Lunch on  Wednesday 20th June. We will move off to the Bonsai Museum immediately after the coffee morning. Please let Joan,  know whether you are to attend before Monday 18th June. A deposit of €5 will be taken with your booking. It is currently thought that this event, involving lunch at the Bodega el Duende, will constitute the June Monthly Lunch event.
Although the day was well watered by constant heavy rain this did not dampen the enthusiasm or enjoyment of those of us who went on the Cordoba day out on 4th May. We will look to see if we can recommend future events through this combination of sharing expenses with other travellers.
In October, we hope to advise you that we are to visit the Zoo in Fuengirola. No firm plans have yet been made, so please check future newsletters and our web site for updates.
Do not forget to also join us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera) for an interesting break in the week! During the past month for the past 4-5 weeks we have had over 20 members at each event. Interest in BAM has been excellent and during the month we have gained 3 new members; we warmly welcome Josephine, Wilhelmina and Eddie.

NEWSLETTER APRIL 2012
The March BAM lunch was held on on 29th March, at the Pesquera Restaurant, Puerta del Principe. Thanks go to Mary, together with Pat, who organised and coordinated the lunch. The restaurant offered quality food in copious quantity which was enjoyed by everyone. During the occasion a formal presentation of our 2011 charity gift to Claveles took place. The cheque for €300 was received by Marion Winter on behalf of Claveles. Photographs were taken and it is planned that a press release will be issued on this presentation.

It is planned that the April Monthly lunch will take place at the Chinese restaurant, Mare Nostrum on 26th April. Unfortunately, our original volunteer to organise the event, David, cannot leave the UK for another month, due to an infected foot. As a consequence Joan and I will sort out the details. In visiting the restaurant, it has been agreed that we will have a banquet similar to that supplied last year, about 13 courses, together with coffee or a dessert for a mere €14.00 for members and €16.00 for non-members, as last year. If you wish to attend this lunch, please contact Joan, as soon as possible.
It is intended to cancel the May monthly Lunch, but instead hold a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee lunch on Sunday 3rd June at Club Naranga, Calahonda. This is the same location BAM used for last year’s successful Christmas lunch. The ‘Royal Roast’ is a 4 course meal to include a drink and staff tip at an inclusive cost of only €15 for members and €17 for non-members. Those wishing to attend, all nationalities being warmly welcomed, should advise Pat; giving her €10 deposit to secure their place. If necessary, transport from Marbella to Calahonda will be organised. The theme for the event being British it would be appreciated if attendees would try to be dressed in clothing based on red, blue and white colours.
The revised date for our excursion to the Bonsai Museum and then on to for lunch at the Bodega el Duende on a Wednesday has not yet been fixed. Hopefully if we hear that this event is still needed we will try to arrange it again. To date we have not had any positive responses. Please let Joan, know whether you are to attend either event in the future.
Arrangements for our Cordoba trip are going well. We have now booked 20 places. I have been in contact with Valerie, the organizer, and rearranged the pick-up times to be ¾ hour later than previously stipulated by the organizer. They are now:
0800 La Canada (by Worten)
0805 El Rosario
0810 Leila Playa
0815 La Cala
0830 Benalmadena/Arroyo de la Miel Renfe Station
From there it is a 2 ½ coach ride to Cordoba with a comfort stop of half an hour.  We should therefore be in Cordoba about 11:00. More places are still available. Nearer to the time please advise us to where you will meet the coach.
Both Annabel and Violette have sent formal thanks for the flowers given to them and Natasha has verbally thanked BAM for the books given to her. Let us hope that they and David are soon able to join us in our BAM activities. Likewise, may our thoughts remain with Annabel, Natasha and Lynne and hope we soon hear that both have overcome their infirmities.
Do not forget to also join us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera) for an interesting break in the week!

NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012
The last monthly BAM lunch was held on Thursday 23rd February at the Blue Palm on the Pseo Marítimo. This restaurant offered a selection of English style courses. Although we did not have the usual level of attendees, those that did go thought they had good value for money. Thanks Mary for organising this venue.
Our next monthly BAM lunch is to be held on 29th March, at the Pesquera Restaurant, Puerta del Príncipe. Mary has again kindly taken it on herself to organise the lunch. The menu is to contain, soup, salad, Chicken or Fish, tea, ice cream and drink or arrival. The cost to be €16.00 for members and €18.00 for non-members. Please advise Mary,  if you wish to attend and your choice of fish or meat.
A formal presentation of our 2011 charity gift to Claveles will take place during the lunch period. This will be received by Marion Winter on behalf of Claveles. Please put this occasion and date in your diaries. It would be great if we had a large turnout and could make a press release of the event.
Unfortunately, due to incapacity of both Joan and I our excursion to the Bonsai Museum and then on to for lunch at the Bodega El duende on Wednesday 29th February did not happen. Hopefully if we hear that this event is still needed we will try to arrange it again. Please let Joan, know whether you are to attend either event in the future.
Do no forget to also join us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera) for an interesting break in the week!
On a personal note, Joan would like to thank you all for your kind remarks, get well card and beautiful flowers. Your concern was much appreciated.

NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012
During the month we have had a considerable number of members enjoying the Wednesday morning coffee event. I am delighted that so many like this pastime.
Thanks go to Violette who kindly arranged this month´s BAM lunch held at the Jaipur restaurant.
Again it turned out to be an excellent occasion.
The next BAM lunch is to be held on Thursday 23rd February at the Blue Palm on the Paseo Marítimo. This restaurant offers a selection of English style courses. The total cost which includes the service tip, but not a drink, will be only 11 euros for members and 13 euros for guests. If you wish to enjoy this event, please, telephone Mary, to book your place. It would be much appreciated if after having booked your place, should you not be able to attend you give the lunch organizer at least 1 days notice, otherwise it is possible you will still be asked to pay for the meal.
The March BAM lunch will be at the Pesquera Restaurant; more details will follow in the next newsletter.
The Salon Varieties Theatre continues to stage a variety of attractive events. Anyone interested in attending any perfomance as part of a BAM group should contact Yutta
I am pleased to inform you that we have had several visitors joining us on Wednesdays at 11:00 for a coffee morning at the café Acebuche (Hotel Baviera). In fact, we are delighted to welcome Alex, Carole and Colin as new members.
Our new member Alex is a wiz at IT and web design. In such a short time he has already created the beginning of a great website for us: http://www.britishassociationofmarbella.diarioscreativos.com
This site will eventually include photographs and useful tips for all members. Many thanks must go to Alex for putting BAM on the internet. Please access the website. It is very informative. We would welcome your comments. If you have any comments or content you would like added, please initially contact me,  so we can assess the best approach to integrate your subject matter.
With an attempt to offer a little more activity, it has been suggested that we should arrange throughout the year a number of excursions. Already I have received a positive response from many members, to the idea of visiting, on different occasions: the Bonsai Museum in Marbella, the Motor Museum, Picasso Museum, Glass Museum in Málaga, trips to see; the almond blossoms near Colmenar, the lakes near Ardales and El Chorro, together with day excursions to the Carnival at Cádiz and Córdoba. I guess we now have enough to work on for this year. Anyone who feels the can assist in aranging events should contact me
As ever our thoughts go out to all our friends we have not seen for the past few weeks and months. Let us hope Lynne is soon better and we can enjoy her company.
At our Monthly BAM lunch on 29th March, a formal presentation of our 2011 charity gift to Claveles will take place. This will be received by Marion Winter on behalf of Claveles. Please put this occasion and date in your diaries.
